It's very much a tragedy.

I suppose it is silly for everyone to be singing, but when I was a kid, our family actually did burst into song at random times, so musicals don't seem silly to me just because of the music. And you have good taste in favorite shows. :)mathbardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05080669832886502549noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5106243389695628804.post-39880032862709033272013-03-31T13:17:00.632-04:002013-03-31T13:17:00.632-04:00Oh, and thanks!Oh, and thanks!Froborrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08782366056731381450noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5106243389695628804.post-77973317430299690142013-03-31T13:15:32.525-04:002013-03-31T13:15:32.525-04:00I don't actually know, is West Side Story a co...I don't actually know, is West Side Story a comedy? I've never seen it, but I've always read Romeo and Juliet as an intentional parody of romantic tragedies.

Anyway, I did say "on the surface." The mere fact that everyone sings their feelings is silly and makes it harder to take seriously, but obviously once you get past that the musical form has some real strengths. The whole reason to have people sing their feelings is that music is the most purely emotional art form, the one that can convey and trigger emotion without anything else getting in the way, and that's why a show like (to pick my personal favorite) Les Mis can have so much power.

But it *is* silly that people are walking around on barricades singing.Froborrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08782366056731381450noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5106243389695628804.post-28202137719906962802013-03-31T12:46:49.251-04:002013-03-31T12:46:49.251-04:00Musicals, after all, are on the surface silly, sin...Musicals, after all, are on the surface silly, sincere, and endearingly cheesy

And this is why West Side Story gets shelved in the comedy section. Sorry, pet peeve. Other than that, great article, as usual.mathbardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05080669832886502549noreply@blogger.com
