Speaking of which, I updated last week's liveblog a couple of days ago.
Chatlog for "Leap of Faith" below the cut!
<Froborr> OMG Big Mac and Applejack splashing SO ADORBS
<Froborr> BUT WHY DO THE APPLES GET MORE EPISODES THAN EVERYONE ELSE COMBIENS
<Froborr> Is this a Granny episode?
<Froborr> Granny is the best Apple!
<Froborr> And this silent film thing is awesome.
<Froborr> You know, the opening credits need a couch gag.
<Froborr> Like, maybe the final picture is slightly different every episode.
<Froborr> Dear Princess Celestia: Today I learned that athletic competition should be left to the races that are good at it.
<Froborr> Seriously WTF Granny, "Leave it to the pegasi?"
<Froborr> OH MY GOD THE FLIM FLAM BROTHERS!
<Froborr> I did NOT expect them to come back!
<Froborr> Oh my god Doctor Whooves for the better time!
<Froborr> YES now they're the medical-industrial complex instead of ust generic capitalism!
<Froborr> Fun fact: snake oil actually IS good for you, it's full of Omega-3.
<Froborr> THEY EVEN HAVE AN AUDIENCE PLANT THIS IS THE BEST!
<Froborr> Oh no. Poor Granny. She's pondering getting them to heal her hip, isn't she?
<Froborr> This is why I never hope. Hope is evil.
<Froborr> Also, given that I'm watching Baccano! at the moment, this is gaining extra creepiness.
<Froborr> "Horsentery"!?
<Froborr> hay fever
<Froborr> *groan*
<Froborr> Wow, that was quite the final sting.
<Froborr>
No, there's no tonic in Equestria that can make an old pony young
again, but it's amazing what a dose of confidence and some old-fashioned
placebo effect can do.
<Froborr> Granny is going to hurt herself so bad.
<Froborr> The tonic is about 80% Flim-Flam pee and 20% year-old cider.
<Froborr> Farm pony with big glasses? He's going to turn into Superpony, isn't he?
<Froborr> Heheh, "Shill."
<Froborr>
This is the episode where Applejack teaches someone an important lesson
about Honesty and gets her crystal coffer key, isn't it?
<Froborr> And it'll be Shill that learns the lesson.
<Froborr> Apple juice and beet leaves? Ew.
<Froborr> Hmm, this is actually a good dilemma for Applejack! Honesty vs. her family's happiness!
<Froborr> And now Applejack is morally complicit in everyone hurt by the fake tonic.
<Froborr> APPLEJACK WHAT ARE YOU DOING
<Froborr>
Either you have somehow forgotten that the tonic is fake, or you are
hatching a Wacky Scheme (tm) liable to get your GRANDMOTHER injured!
<Froborr> Hmm, I'm noticing a lot of the same ponies in line as earlier in the episode.
<Froborr> Nothing so toxic or easily manipulated as hope.
<Froborr>
Yep, and that's why people with a reputation for honesty have an
obligation to actually be, y'know, honest. Including with themselves.
<Froborr> Okay, their routine is actually really beautiful.
<Froborr> lol, Lyra.
<Froborr> This is quite possibly the best Applejack episode ever.
<Froborr> She is getting ACTUAL CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT and CONSEQUENCES and DILEMMAS
<Froborr> Applejack is going to end up breaking the record, isn't she?
<Froborr> Or not. Dang.
<Froborr> Yay, another double-moral1
<Froborr> Jimmy Stewart! That's who Shill reminds me of!
<Froborr> That is PERFECTION ITSELF.
<Froborr> Yeah, that bit is the next key, isn't it?
<Froborr> Yep.
<Froborr> Okay, yeah, that was a really good episode.
<Froborr> Not quite MAUD PIE good, but what is?
<Froborr> Though structurally, it was notably VERY similar to Rarity in Manehattan. Still, good stuff.

ReplyDelete[14:00] <@Sylocat> Wait, Big Macintosh in a splashing contest?
[14:00] <@Sylocat> Ah, a flashback
[14:01] <@Sylocat> I love the film reel effect
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Oh my goodness...
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Nnnnnnope
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Yikes, we're seeing a whole new side of Big Macintosh this week
[14:02] <@Sylocat> It's "Somepony To Watch Over Me" all over again
[14:02] <@Sylocat> Plus, Apple Bloom is a CMC, so she'd wind up sending a tidal wave over the entire town or something
[14:03] <@Sylocat> Ah, I know that music
[14:03] <@Sylocat> Ooh, pied piper
[14:03] <@Sylocat> A circus tent? That's oddly immobile for them
[14:04] <@Sylocat> Doctor Whooves surrounded by question marks
[14:04] <@Sylocat> Another song
[14:04] <@Sylocat> This hits home
[14:05] <@Sylocat> I have sniffles
[14:05] <@Sylocat> Oh yikes
[14:05] <@Sylocat> I assume "snake oil" is on the ingredients list?
[14:05] <@Sylocat> Uh oh
[14:06] <@Sylocat> Let me guess, it lasts a few minutes only?
[14:06] <@Sylocat> These two are shameless
[14:06] <@Sylocat> Wait, who was that?
[14:06] <@Sylocat> Carmen Miranda?
[14:06] <@Sylocat> UGH
[14:06] <@Sylocat> Nightmare fuel
[14:07] <@Sylocat> This episode is gross
[14:07] <@Sylocat> Oh boy, here we go
[14:07] <@Sylocat> Eeyup
[14:07] <@Sylocat> ...They fish with apples?
[14:08] <@Sylocat> Except Trixie, that is
[14:08] <@Sylocat> She shakes off like a dog
[14:09] <@Sylocat> Ah, so it's Discord-approved
[14:09] <@Sylocat> I honestly have no idea where this is going
[14:09] <@Sylocat> Consult Twilight
[14:09] <@Sylocat> She'll analyze the thing
[14:09] <@Sylocat> with SCIENCE
[14:10] <@Sylocat> Ah, an audience plant
[14:10] <@Sylocat> This is about the placebo effect
[14:10] <@Sylocat> Hahah... escape route
[14:11] <@Sylocat> Wait, how did they know thaT?
[14:12] <@Sylocat> Ooh, this one is diabolical
[14:12] <@Sylocat> This is like Feeling Pinkie Keen in reverse
[14:13] <@Sylocat> No wonder it's called "Leap of Faith"
[14:13] <@Sylocat> Wait, does Granny Smith know?
[14:14] <@Sylocat> Ooh, here's an idea... Applejack should make her own tonic, and set herself up as a competitor
[14:14] <@Sylocat> (okay, Applejack wouldn't do that)
[14:14] <@Sylocat> Oh yikes, this is downright cruel
[14:15] <@Sylocat> ...Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, it's bobsled time!
[14:15] <@Sylocat> Marketing is magic
[14:16] <@Sylocat> Wow
[14:16] <@Sylocat> Mom just said, "That's one of the coolest little bits of animation I've ever seen."
[14:16] <@Sylocat> Water ballet
[14:16] <@Sylocat> "Aquabatics?" Is that really a word?
[14:17] <@Sylocat> Ouch
[14:17] <@Sylocat> Oh, capitalism
[14:17] <@Sylocat> Ah, this is Applejack's key episode
[14:18] <@Sylocat> And what's-his-name is gonna give her the key
[14:18] <@Sylocat> This ain't good
[14:18] <@Sylocat> Mom just said, "What is this, an episode about steroids?"
[14:19] <@Sylocat> Oh just run them out of town again already
[14:19] <@Sylocat> Yep, shimmery-eyes
[14:19] <@Sylocat> Now that's a moral
[14:19] <@Sylocat> Yep, placebo effect
[14:19] <@Sylocat> I like the morals here
[14:20] <@Sylocat> Yep, he's gonna give Applejack her key
[14:20] <@Sylocat> I wonder what it is
[14:20] <@Sylocat> Ah, it's the Bit
[14:21] <@Sylocat> Flim and Flam, masters of the speedy exit
[14:21] <@Sylocat> Mom liked it, so did I
[14:22] <@Sylocat> I like the double morals here.
[14:22] <@Sylocat> Okay, time to transcribe this...
Well, I hope the transcript wasn't QUITE as excruciating as when I livestreamed Rarity Takes Manehattan all by myself.

Science-based medicine is one of my balliwicks, and one little thing that I liked about this episode was the use of background ponies. You see the same four or five ponies with the same illnesses or injuries in the crowd at every Flim-Flam show - the pony in the makeshift wheelchair, the pony with the swollen hooves, the pony with the swollen hindquarters - which implies that they may be -feeling- better, but they're not -getting- better. Although it does beg the question of why they didn't notice Shill wearing the same costume two nights in a row.
