This episode's log below the cut!

[15:00] <@Sylocat> ...My stream just locked up
[15:00] <Whiteeyes> So, what spell did we just lose foreshadowing on?
[15:00] <Whiteeyes> Oh no!
[15:00] <@Sylocat> Wait, it's back
[15:00] <@Sylocat> The Wonderbolts have a written exam?
[15:01] <Froborr> Great, Twilight trying to convince Rainbow Dash to have test anxiety.
[15:01] <@Sylocat> Ah, Rainbow Dash was actually listening
[15:01] <Froborr> THANK YOU, RD.
[15:01] <Whiteeyes> So they aren't all meat heads, duh.
[15:01] <mere_oblivion> Maybe it's an oral.
[15:01] <Froborr> I've never gotten anxious about a test in my life. There are always more tests.
[15:01] <Whiteeyes> Freak out aria!
[15:01] <@Sylocat> Facehoof
[15:02] <@Sylocat> Woo, teleport
[15:02] <Whiteeyes> I also don't get test anxiety.
[15:02] <Whiteeyes> So, predictions on the moral?
[15:02] <Froborr> I really hope this doesn't turn into a redux of the Applejack/Rarity odd-couple ep, that was awful.
[15:02] <Froborr> Eat the book!
[15:02] <Froborr> Eat the book to absorb its knowledge powers!
[15:02] <@Sylocat> Hahahah
[15:02] <Whiteeyes> That would provide plenty of fiber.
[15:02] <Froborr> Twilight is advocating WRITING IN A BOOK!?
[15:03] <Froborr> She is dead to me.
[15:03] <Whiteeyes> Highlighting isn't writing, it's a study method!
[15:03] <@Sylocat> I am NOT THAT TALL
[15:03] <Froborr> It's a book-destroying method, you mean.
[15:03] <Whiteeyes> Musical chairs!
[15:04] <@Sylocat> Whoa, worldbuilding!
[15:04] <@Sylocat> FIREFLY
[15:04] <@Sylocat> "General Firefly"
[15:04] <Whiteeyes> And hard cannon destruction.
[15:04] <Whiteeyes> Head canon
[15:04] <Froborr> Firefly founded the Wonderbolts! Neat!
[15:05] <@Sylocat> ...Flash cards?
[15:05] <Froborr> You know, there's actually some continuity here: Twilight is the only one who never actually learned Lesson Zero.
[15:05] <Whiteeyes> Not you Flash.
[15:06] <Whiteeyes> How does Lesson Zero apply here?
[15:06] <mere_oblivion> "Or what!" I've always wanted to say that.
[15:06] <Froborr> Lesson Zero: People care about what they care about, and you don't get to tell them what they should or shouldn't care about.
[15:06] <@Sylocat> ..."General Bracing Donut Glaze?"
[15:07] <Whiteeyes> Scene, why must you mention food?
[15:07] <@Sylocat> LEsson Zero also applies to learning styles...
[15:07] <mere_oblivion> But most schooling consists of being made to care about what you don't naturally care about.
[15:07] <Froborr> Well, and also, if RD isn't worried about the test, it's wrong for Twilight to try to make her be worried.
[15:08] <@Sylocat> True that, mere_oblivion
[15:08] <mere_oblivion> TY.
[15:08] <@Sylocat> Oh boy, how's Fluttershy gonna figure into this?
[15:08] <Froborr> In my experience, most of schooling involves being taught naturally interesting things in a manner designed to make them as boring as possible.
[15:08] <totient> ^
[15:08] <Whiteeyes> Wonderbolt Twilight? *scribble scribble*
[15:08] <totient> or d) all of the above
[15:08] <Whiteeyes> I loved traditional schooling.
[15:08] <mere_oblivion> Excellent description, Froborr, sadly.
[15:09] <@Sylocat> Well, they ended the fight early rather than dragging it out for the whole episode. Yep, that's character growth
[15:09] <@Sylocat> AHAHAHAHAH
[15:09] <Whiteeyes> Fluttershy, why?
[15:09] <Froborr> This play is THE BEST THING
[15:09] <totient> fluttershy is best teacher
[15:09] <@Sylocat> How in Equestria did she... even for Fluttershy, how did she convince them to do that?
[15:10] <@Sylocat> ...Now that was a Pinkie Pie entrance
[15:10] <Froborr> What.
[15:10] <Whiteeyes> Pinkie is giving me 80s flashbacks! No more PSA raps! Why!?
[15:10] <mere_oblivion> So the pony version of hip hop consists of . . . trip trot?
[15:10] <@Sylocat> ...And the world of fanfiction did tremble
[15:10] <@Sylocat> Hahah... mom just said, "Oh my god."
[15:11] <Froborr> Yeah, RD got about as much out of that rap as I did.
[15:11] <@Sylocat> Oh no...
[15:11] <Whiteeyes> Rarity, please save us.
[15:11] <@Sylocat> What is she wearing?
[15:11] <mere_oblivion> RD's going to find that her best way of learning is Experiential, which is to say actually doing a Wonderbolt-like act of heroism?
[15:12] <Froborr> That's what I'm guessing, yeah.
[15:12] <@Sylocat> Ahaha... oh, Rarity
[15:12] <Froborr> They're hilarious!
[15:13] <Froborr> That was a Maud-calibre expression, Rarity.
[15:13] <@Sylocat> Oh, it's the fashion show from Simple Ways all over again
[15:13] <Froborr> lol at Applejack
[15:13] <@Sylocat> Ahahah... Applejack, the Element of Honesty
[15:13] <Whiteeyes> And AJ is useless everybunny!
[15:13] <Froborr> "You're boned, give up."
[15:13] <@Sylocat> A reprise!
[15:13] <@Sylocat> Oh yikes, she's improvising now
[15:14] <Froborr> I believe the term is "freestylin"
[15:14] <Whiteeyes> I believe the term is "put me out of my misery".
[15:14] <@Sylocat> Aww...
[15:14] <Froborr> Twilight's wing joints are the reverse of RD's.
[15:15] <Froborr> Not an error, consistently throughout this scene. Weird.
[15:15] <Whiteeyes> Play that sad violin.
[15:15] <@Sylocat> Maybe it's an Alicorn thing?
[15:15] <@Sylocat> Wait, what was that? I missed it
[15:15] <@Sylocat> Ah, and here's the solution
[15:15] <@Sylocat> Whoa, she's stealing Pinkie Pie's tricks
[15:15] <Whiteeyes> Peddle powered helicopter.
[15:16] <Froborr> RD has the Sherlock Scan?
[15:16] <@Sylocat> ...and Sherlock Holmes
[15:16] <Froborr> Who knew!
[15:16] <Whiteeyes> Not RD.
[15:16] <Froborr> Whoa, that was pretty cool transforming the cloud.
[15:16] <@Sylocat> Oh yikes... the cloud listened to her emotions
[15:16] <Whiteeyes> She doesn't realize what she's doing.
[15:16] <mere_oblivion> "For the rain it raineth every day."
[15:16] <draftpunk> Well, that's fan art waiting to happen.  Fluttershy could be Watson.
[15:17] <totient> I'm liking how the moral is shaping up
[15:17] <Whiteeyes> She really could...
[15:17] <@Sylocat> Right, Twilight's wings are different, I didn't notice before
[15:17] <@Sylocat> Ouch
[15:17] <Whiteeyes> Wait, Rainbow can't be Holmes, she's too humble and has too much tact and social skills.
[15:18] <@Sylocat> Yikes, is this meta-commentary on the job market?
[15:18] <mere_oblivion> Digging ditches, selling shoes--sounds about right!
[15:18] <@Sylocat> Eeyup
[15:18] <Froborr> Being a Wonderbolt probably IS a glamour industry.
[15:18] <@Sylocat> So, it's a tract in favor of alternative education styles
[15:18] <@Sylocat> Which is awesome
[15:18] <Whiteeyes> It is also part of the military.
[15:19] <mere_oblivion> I was worried she'd have to watch a MOOC.
[15:19] <Whiteeyes> "Everyone learns in their own unique way."
[15:19] <@Sylocat> And now Twilight has a remote-control spell as well
[15:19] <Froborr> "EUP"
[15:19] <Froborr> lol
[15:19] <Whiteeyes> I wonder if that was what she was studying at the episodes start?
[15:20] <@Sylocat> Wait, Pinkie stole Rarity's line... is Rarity about to rap?
[15:20] <@Sylocat> Wait, who are all these onies?
[15:20] <@Sylocat> *ponies
[15:20] <@Sylocat> Topiary? They went that far?
[15:20] <Whiteeyes> The townsfolk she saved back in Mysterious Mare Do Well
[15:20] <@Sylocat> Ooh, and Fluttershy's halfway to her Rainbow Power form
[15:21] <@Sylocat> Uh oh
[15:21] <@Sylocat> AHAHAH
[15:21] <Froborr> So now RD's in the Reserves?
[15:21] <@Sylocat> Mom just said, "MLP takes on public education"
[15:21] <Whiteeyes> Psyche...that's who Rainbow is, Spencer not Holmes!

[15:22] <Whiteeyes> Also, 100%? Really?
[15:22] <@Sylocat> And then mom said, "But what is a teacher to do, faced with a room of students who have different learning styles... and most of them don't know what their learning style is."
[15:22] <Whiteeyes> A very fair point your mom makes.
[15:23] <Whiteeyes> This is why kids have time to study at home.
[15:23] <@Sylocat> (she was a special-ed assistant for years)
[15:23] <Froborr> Double or triple the number of teachers, spend most of kindergarten identifying learning styles, tailor instructional segments for the different styles or to hit multiple styles.
[15:24] <Whiteeyes> If they had the budget, I'm sure they would.
[15:24] <Froborr> And before you ask, the way you increase the number of teachers is by raising salaries and offering student-loan waivers.
[15:24] <Froborr> This would of course require us to actual care about education and be willing to spend money on it.
[15:24] <mere_oblivion> Capital notions! WHy aren't you people running the country?
[15:24] <Whiteeyes> There are plenty of teachers unemployed right now.
[15:25] <@Sylocat> Hah... Froborr, I told mom what you said, and she said, "Tell him to run for governor."
[15:25] <Whiteeyes> In fact there are plenty more teachers than are fully employed, so the number of available teachers isn't the problem.
[15:25] <totient> But surely you wouldn't want to cut funds from our poor, starving, military-industrial complex?
[15:26] <Whiteeyes> Of course, if you cut funds from the stupid sports stadiums they build in schools...
[15:26] <@Sylocat> Fun fact: We just spent nearly a trillion dollars on fighter planes that don't even work
[15:26] <draftpunk> *head desk*
[15:26] <Whiteeyes> Oh my God, can we leave politics out of this guys?
[15:27] <@Sylocat> Well, it was kind of a political episode
[15:27] <Whiteeyes> It's not political!
[15:27] <Froborr> It kind of is. It's taking on the educational system.
[15:27] <@Sylocat> I meant, sociopolitically relevant. But hey, we should probably move on. So, thoughts on the episode?
[15:27] <Whiteeyes> It's about learning styles and that just because you don't learn a certain way doesn't make you dumb!
[15:27] <Froborr> That's not a political position?
[15:28] <totient> funding for education aside, I'm glad to see MLP encouraging kids to find out how they can study best
[15:28] <@Sylocat> But Whiteeyes, there's no way you can actually address that without taking on the state of education in this country
[15:28] <Whiteeyes> General Firefly has laid siege to many a head canon.
[15:28] <@Sylocat> So yeah, that was an awesome episode
[15:28] <mere_oblivion> I agree, totient. And I thought it was a dern good episode.
[15:28] <Froborr> It wasn't bad.
[15:28] <draftpunk> I enjoyed it.  Too bad it flew by so quickly.
[15:29] <Whiteeyes> World building, such as what the guard is actually called.
[15:29] <Froborr> Oddly, I found myself not caring at all about the worldbuilding.
[15:29] <Whiteeyes> And that it didn't exist untill after Nightmare Moon.
[15:29] <Froborr> Probably because, unlike Hearth's Warming Eve, there was actual character stuff going on.
[15:30] <@Sylocat> Interesting that they slowed down the pacing of the episode to highlight Rainbow Dash's learning style, since you'd think RD's learning style would be meta-narratively fast-paced
[15:30] <Whiteeyes> So any fic with pre-rift guards, Solar/Lunar Guard, etc, has had their canon shattered.
[15:30] <@Sylocat> Or was it deliberately going for contrast? Maybe that's the key
[15:30] <mere_oblivion> I think you're onto something there, sylo.
[15:31] <Froborr> Meh. I've never understood why anyone cares about that. It's a fanfic anyway, it's already outside the continuity.
[15:31] <Whiteeyes> True, but it changes the way you look at things.
[15:31] <Whiteeyes> Nothing exists in vacuume.
[15:32] <Froborr> *shrugs* It's like outdated science in a 1950s science fiction story. You just kind of have to say, "Well, they had no way of knowing."
[15:32] <@Sylocat> Of course, you could just slap an "Alternate Universe" tag on it
[15:32] <Froborr> EVER fic is an AU fic.
[15:32] <Froborr> *EVERY
[15:33] <Whiteeyes> A guard less era implies something different than "there was always a guard", so yeah tat only kinda matters going forward from here.
[15:33] <@Sylocat> Well, now we get into philosophy.
[15:33] <Whiteeyes> It really changes the way you envision pre-rift Equestria...now that we know that it's called that.
[15:34] <Froborr> It doesn't change it that much for me?
[15:34] <@Sylocat> I wonder when Discord's first reign features into this
[15:34] <Froborr> I don't see much different between having no military and having a purely ceremonial military.
[15:35] <Whiteeyes>  There is no indication the EUP is ceremonial.
[15:35] <Froborr> Well, we know Luna and Celestia were visibly younger when they overthrew Discord than when they fought Sombra or had the rift.
[15:35] <totient> this seems terribly fateful--I ended up here because I was perusing Froborr's blog as a way to procrastinate from learning math, and this was a pretty invigorating moral
[15:35] <Froborr> There's no indication it isn't, and every past conflict we've heard about has been against a single powerful individual, not an ary.
[15:35] <Froborr> *army
[15:35] <Whiteeyes> Then again it was all during the same year...
[15:35] <@Sylocat> Except for the Changeling attack
[15:36] <Froborr> True, but even that was defeated by two people, basically.
[15:36] <mere_oblivion> Good luck with the math, totient!
[15:36] <Froborr> Yeah, good luck totient!
[15:36] <@Sylocat> But one of them was specifically the captain of the royal guard. And we saw the other guards in action
[15:37] <@Sylocat> Thirded. Good luck.
[15:37] <Whiteeyes> Sombra, Discord, and Nightmare Moon all happened during the same year...no wonder Luna snapped after fighting pony Sauron and magic Q.
[15:37] <Froborr> Um, what?
[15:37] <@Sylocat> I meant, one of the two ponies that defeated the Changelings
[15:37] <Froborr> There's no reason to believe they happened in the same year.
[15:38] <@Sylocat> Well, the S4 premiere is mentioned as the first Summer Sun Celebration since Luna's return
[15:38] <Froborr> We know because of the prophecy that Nightmare Moon was precisely 1000 years before the premiere, but the other two could easily be, and almost certainly are, rounded.
[15:38] <mere_oblivion> Glad you found the moral invigorating, totient. And if I knew a secret to learning math, I would have learned math by now.
[15:38] <@Sylocat> I learn most of my advanced math by watching Vi Hart videos
[15:38] <Whiteeyes> Sorry, accounting major. Math just comes easy to me.
[15:39] <Froborr> Okay, so I'll revise to say I don't see much difference between a purely ceremonial/ineffectual military and no military.
[15:40] <totient> mere_oblivion: honestly, that's sort of the point.  It's not particularly easy, and seeing our favorite ponies struggling to get things into their heads  makes facing that more okay
[15:40] <@Sylocat> Fair enough
[15:40] <Whiteeyes> You know, looking back at S1-3 and realizing that it's only one year, Twilight's stress suddenly makes a lot more sense.
[15:40] <mere_oblivion> You lucky devil, Whiteeyes!
[15:41] <@Sylocat> Heck, even if it's four years, that's still a pretty troubling average
[15:41] <@Sylocat> (and they don't have season breaks)
[15:42] <Whiteeyes> True, but it would have given her more time to relax and have stress free days.
