The trailer for Equestria Girls is out.
I'll have a more detailed response (and a link to the actual video) tomorrow or the next day, but for now, my initial response is that it looks like it's trying to be Trollz, and I take it as further evidence that the movie is going to be excruciatingly terrible.
So, which of the six stages of brony grief are we at right now?
ReplyDeleteOn the plus side, it's just a movie. It can probably be safely ignored without it affecting the show.
ReplyDeleteVery true. And there is a remote possibility that it might be good. I'm filing it in the same mental category as the Doctor Who anniversary special, what might be called a cautious pessimism.
DeleteI'm trying to be cautiously optimistic. On one hand, the culture shock looks like it will be reasonably handled, but on the other hand, I don't like the boyfriend thing.
ReplyDeleteI'm going for cautious pessimism: I expect it to be bad, but I'll give it a fair shake, and I'll have no problem accepting it if somehow turns out to be good.

ReplyDeleteLOL
DeleteWell, I moved out of denial a while back. I'm not angry that it exists, don't think I ever was... Depression, I guess? But I prefer "cautious pessimism" as a descriptor.
Saw someone say that "At worst, it'll be as good as some of the weaker FiM episodes..which are still better than most other kid's shows."
ReplyDeleteThe problem with that is that there are many who haven't gotten over episodes like The Mysterious Mare Do Well. If the actual movie itself causes that level of negative reaction, then there's gonna be complaints about it everywhere.
Eh, I don't care about whether it gets a positive or negative reaction. I still like Mysterious Mare Do Well, Magical Mystery Cure, and a few other episodes that got strong negative reactions.
DeleteI'm just bracing myself for it to not be good, which has little or nothing to do with what kind of reaction it gets.
In that case I don't know how 'good' or not it will be, but if you enjoyed those episodes it's a fair bet that you will be more open to enjoying the movie than most.
DeleteSorry, that was kinda ambiguous. I meant that you would likely be more able to enjoy the movie while watching it, as opposed to all who are prepared to find every flaw.
DeleteI'm one of those who gets a little unhappy when things could have been done better, so, yeah.

DeleteWe'll see. I'm usually pretty good at taking a movie on its own terms, rather than bringing in my own expectations... but my expectations for this are pretty low. Still, I've been surprised before, and anything is possible.
DeleteWhat disappoints me about the movie is that its set in a high school. Aside of the shift in perspective that entails, I worry that the more universal message MLP carries may be lost in EG.
DeleteI mean no disrespect, but Americans have issues when it comes to high school. At least based on the media they produce. Seriously. And those don't really translate outside of the US.
High school dramas are more embarrassing than ponies, is what I'm saying.

DeleteOh, believe me, it's not just in media. Our high schools are horrifying.

High school dramas aimed at people actually in high school or over are usually not that bad. But the ones aimed at kids? *shudder*
