Pony Thought of the Day: Children of the Night

Children of the Night is finally out! Not at all what I was expecting (I didn't realize that the musical number was going to be basically the whole thing) but not at all bad. I think it's the best animated of the fan animations I've seen.

  1. How much of the Lunaverse will I have to read before I'll have any idea what I just watched?

    1. None whatsoever. It's intended to be a prequel to the TV series.

    2. ...to what TV series?

I mean, the song is beautiful and the video is gorgeous and I am genuinely curious as to what alternate continuity this fits into (it looks fascinating), but it's not a prequel to FiM.

(also "thee" is singular. The second-person plural is still "You," even in classic lit)

    3. The way I read it, this is the first part of the story of Nightmare Moon as told by a Luna loyalist; it's a depiction of what her jealousy (which is, obviously, her real motivation for wanting to found a colony ruled by herself alone) led her to do that earned Celestia's ire. I'm assuming there's going to be a sequel in which Celestia goes after her to get the kids back, and things escalate until we get the story from "Elements of Harmony."

(Yes, use of "thee" as plural drives me nuts. Though IIRC, the objective second-person plural is actually "ye" and only the subjective, the plural of "thou," is "you.")

    4. Ah... okay, that makes more sense. They might have made that exposition a little clearer, though.

Good point. And a word ending in a long e sound certainly trips off the tongue easier in that song. Though actually "You" is more often used as the second-person formal singular, as a holdover from the days when anyone of higher station (not just the king) used the royal we or something like it.
