Chatlog below the cut!
<Froborr> Okay, finally starting ep 7.
<Froborr> Deep-fried assorted objects. Huh.
<Froborr> Oh no, her quasi-adoptive pseudo-family is going to sexually harrass her, araen't they?
<Froborr> Yep.
<Froborr> Because that's funny, as opposed to absolutely freaking horrifying.
<Froborr> Can Mako and her entire family please die in a fire, like, seven episodes ago?
<Froborr> Knife. Throwing. Club. Wat.
<Froborr> What is a Nanjing Lil--wait.
<Froborr> No.
<Froborr> Did they just make the RAPE OF NANKING into a weird joke?
<Froborr> Fuck this show.
<Froborr> ...okay, starting a fight club is actually kinda clever, except of course it'll never be approved.
<Froborr> Oh, they're addressing that.
<Froborr> Satsuki continues to be 10,000x better than the show she's stuck in.
<Froborr> Yes, drown her n paperwork! This episode suddenly got much better.
<Froborr> Wait, no, and then it turned shitty, because Mako is going to have a significant role.
<Froborr> ...was that mutant frog people club? I think my high school had one of those.
<Froborr> Wait, no, I'm getting it confused with Sunnydale again.
<Froborr> So, what happens to utterly destroy their new life?
<Froborr>
Ah, of course, it's one of those episodes where trying to rise above
your station leads to misery. Because stations are a thing people have.
<Froborr> Okay, the dog living the high life made me chuckle.
<Froborr> Ah, so Satsuki's scheme is for their success to corrupt them.
<Froborr> Boo on Ryuko missing the peeping, that's bullshit.
<Froborr> Yes yes, seeking power within a corrupt system inherently means accepting that corruption.
<Froborr> Huh, I just realized I don't hate Mako nearly as much in this fight sequence as I do normally.
<Froborr> So, that episode was a thing that happened.
<Froborr> And so Ryuko condemned a family to poverty so crushing they can't even afford real meat. What a happy ending.
<Froborr> Hmm, a plot development? Satsuki's been using Ryuko, eh? No surprise there.
<Froborr>
Final thought: Nowhere near as bad as I feared. Around the middle of
the road for this show. Still not impressed with the series.
Part 1:
ReplyDelete[12:59] @Sylocat So, just me today, huh?
[13:00] @Sylocat Oh all right... I'll try and make it interesting
[13:00] @Sylocat Click
[13:00] @Sylocat Ah yes, this is the Mako's Family episode?
[13:00] @Sylocat Yum
[13:00] @Sylocat Oh wow... real gourmet stuff here
[13:00] @Sylocat Oh yeesh, they're going to spy on her in the bath?
[13:01] @Sylocat Yes, "lively dinners"
[13:01] @Sylocat Yeah, but not with THIS family
[13:01] @Sylocat Wow, she cut them off early rather than dragging it out? Nice
[13:01] @Sylocat More of this action, please
[13:03] @Sylocat Ah, a challenge? While eating?
[13:03] @Sylocat Because of course there's a knife throwing club
[13:03] @Sylocat Ah, she got a free Life Fiber
[13:04] @Sylocat "Nanjing Lily club?" What does that even...
[13:04] @Sylocat "Tightrope Walking club"
[13:04] @Sylocat Ah, this is the mid-game tutoial level where...
[13:04] @Sylocat She split up the acrobatics club?
[13:04] @Sylocat Oh yikes...
[13:04] @Sylocat Dat symbolism
[13:04] @Sylocat AHAHAH
[13:04] @Sylocat "Fight Club""
[13:05] @Sylocat And the first rule of Fight Club is...
[13:05] @Sylocat Wait, who's she gonna give the uniform to?
[13:05] @Sylocat Oh, don't tell me Satsuki approves... yes, yes she does
[13:05] @Sylocat "Spill the beans?" I've already forgotten what beans those are
[13:06] @Sylocat Ahahah... paperwork
[13:06] @Sylocat Paperwork, paperwork, paperwork, paperwork
[13:06] @Sylocat Who's she gonna delegate that too
[13:06] @Sylocat Ah, Mako gets the slot
[13:07] @Sylocat Yikes, this is uncharacteristically sadistic of Ryuko
[13:07] @Sylocat Wait, which club is she fighting? I missed it
[13:07] @Sylocat Be-sasson?
[13:07] @Sylocat I've got a lot of Foofling to do after this episode
[13:07] @Sylocat Clay psychokinesis
[13:07] @Sylocat Earthbending, you mean?
[13:08] @Sylocat Wow... Mako moved up in the world
[13:08] @Sylocat I wonder if this is a permanent change
[13:08] @Sylocat I never thought I'd feel sorry for Mako's family, but jeez, they've been living like hell
[13:09] @Sylocat Ew
[13:09] @Sylocat Go back to deep frying mystery ingredients
[13:09] @Sylocat But seriously, I'm going to feel sorry for them when the status quo is reset at the end of the episode
[13:09] @Sylocat Ooh, impromptu bungee jumping
[13:10] @Sylocat So, Mako does all the paperwork, while Ryuko does the fighting for her?
[13:10] @Sylocat I suppose that suits both of them fine
[13:10] @Sylocat Ping-pong club, Origami club
[13:10] @Sylocat This has more martial arts styles than Ranma 1/2
[13:10] @Sylocat Where's the tea ceremony club?
[13:11] @Sylocat Wait, they're getting bored with it?
[13:11] @Sylocat ah, that's the issue
[13:11] @Sylocat This is surprisingly dark stuff for this show
Part 2:
Delete[13:11] @Sylocat Wow
[13:12] @Sylocat This is... kinda scary
[13:12] @Sylocat Ouch
[13:12] @Sylocat Right, a "good, clean fight" at this academy
[13:13] @Sylocat Oh yikes... this is horrifying
[13:13] @Sylocat Buy ALL the chocolates!
[13:13] @Sylocat And Guts takes poodles out on dates
[13:14] @Sylocat This is surprisingly complex stuff... it shows the upsides AND the downsides of wealth
[13:14] @Sylocat And Satsuki, of course, is turning this against her
[13:14] @Sylocat Of course Satsuki knew this would happen
[13:15] @Sylocat Oh yikes, Mako is forcing the boss fight gauntlet early?
[13:15] @Sylocat Ah, I was wondering where he was
[13:16] @Sylocat Oh yikes, Satsuki is playing REALLY dirty now
[13:16] @Sylocat Yikes, that's horrible
[13:16] @Sylocat This is by far the saddest episode so far
[13:17] @Sylocat Wait, where'd the ice sculpture come from
[13:17] @Sylocat Yes, "they're having a falling out," Professor Obvious
[13:17] @Sylocat What are they... YIKES.
[13:18] @Sylocat "M'dear?"
[13:18] @Sylocat Satsuki just crossed the Moral Event Horizon
[13:19] @Sylocat What is Mako supposed to look like? I remember Chiyo-chan was dressed like that in Kaorin's dream sequence in Azumanga Daioh
[13:19] @Sylocat Whoa
[13:19] @Sylocat Ah, this is the "I won't fight you" strategy
[13:19] @Sylocat Yeesh, it's taking a while to work
[13:20] @Sylocat If this were Game of Thrones, she'd go through with it
[13:20] @Sylocat but it's not, thank goodness
[13:20] @Sylocat Aww
[13:20] @Sylocat Oddly, the giant silly cartoonish tears make it sadder
[13:21] @Sylocat Whoa
[13:21] @Sylocat Mako landed that punch right where it belonged: on the audience
[13:22] @Sylocat And Ryuko gets her fiber!
[13:22] @Sylocat It's gonna be an awesome one
[13:22] @Sylocat His name is "Barazo?"
[13:22] @Sylocat Ahah...
[13:23] @Sylocat D'aww
[13:23] @Sylocat "Mystery Meat" again
[13:23] @Sylocat That was... really good
[13:24] @Sylocat Whoa, Satsuki ain't calling a takeback?
[13:24] @Sylocat Wow... Status Quo may be restored, but the shakeup left a real legacy
Post-episode:
Delete[13:25] <@Sylocat> I've gotta think about this one
[13:27] <@Sylocat> When I first heard that next episode would be about Mako's family, I thought it was gonna be all cringe comedy
[13:27] <@Sylocat> Instead, we got something that, by this show's standard, was almost... poignant
[13:27] <@Sylocat> Okay, I'm gonna post the transcript
I'm very sorry I couldn't join in on this episode, but yesterday was the Magic 2015 prerelease. Kind of took priority.
ReplyDelete[02:31] What is a Nanjing Lil--wait.
ReplyDelete[02:31] No.
[02:32] Did they just make the RAPE OF NANKING into a weird joke?
I looked it up. Nanjin/Nankin Tamasudare is a kind of street performance.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nankin_Tamasudare
Phew, glad to hear it.
DeleteI can't find a source online, but I vaguely recall learning in college that the women raped by the Japanese army were referred to euphemistically by a flower name (I forget what; may have been 'lily'). So... yeah, harsh negative reaction to that. Glad to hear it's unrelated.
