Escaflowne

 [14:00] <Froborr> Here's the opening I like.
[14:00] <Froborr> This is one of my favorite OPs ever, despite never seeing the show.
[14:00] <Froborr> I was sad it wasn't in the first episode.
[14:00] <@Sylocat> Yeah... I love this opening
[14:00] <Froborr> It tells such a story!
[14:01] <Arrlaari> Whoah, I am getting serious encoding glitches here
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Ouch... sorry, Arrlaari
[14:01] <FoME> The giant robots do feel a bit out of place, though.
[14:01] <Froborr> I wonder if my reading of it--that it presages a story about isolated people only able to come together through violence--is true.
[14:01] <Froborr> No spoilers!
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Steampunk mecha, it was really innovative for the time
[14:02] <Arrlaari> Okay, the encoding glitches are persisting into the episode itself, I gotta switch back to the site linked at the top
[14:02] <@Sylocat> (the Ace of Serpents was a bit more on-the-nose than most of the tarot cards they use for an opening)
[14:02] <FoME> I'm not complaining. It's just sticks out a bit.
[14:02] <Froborr> Most people would mention the dragon first, or possibly the teleportation to another world, but Hitomi is still focused on how the universe is cockblocking her.
[14:02] <Arrlaari> Wait, the link  at the top changed
[14:02] <Arrlaari> what was it before?
[14:02] <Froborr> In what POSSIBLE universe does Hitomi's mother BELIEVE them?
[14:02] <Froborr> That's just... what?
[14:02] <Arrlaari> I had to stop the video
[14:03] <@Sylocat> The original link was http://www.anime4fun.com/vision-of-escaflowne-episode-2
[14:03] <@Sylocat> Ah, this brings back SO many memories
[14:03] <Froborr> I am stopped at the line "There is a legendf among the wolf people"
[14:04] <Froborr> let's let Arrlarri catch up
[14:04] <Arrlaari> No glitches but the video skipped the OP
[14:04] <@Sylocat> Oh, we're pausing? Where are we paused at?
[14:04] <Froborr> Let me know when you get to that line, Arrlaari
[14:04] <Froborr> "There is a legend among the wolf peopel"
[14:04] <Froborr> I have lost all ability to spell
[14:04] <FoME> Can you give a time, Froborr?
[14:05] <Arrlaari> I'm now paused at that line
[14:05] <Froborr> 03:16.
[14:05] <Froborr> Let me know when you're there and we'll resume.
[14:05] <FoME> I'm good.
[14:05] <mere_oblivion> I'm at 5:15, no glitches here; guess I better pause.
[14:05] <@Sylocat> Sorry about this, mere_oblivion
[14:06] <mere_oblivion> no problemo
[14:06] <@Sylocat> I can't find "there's a legend among the wolf people," 3:16 for me is "That's Fanelia, little lady"
[14:06] <FoME> Likewise.
[14:06] <mere_oblivion> likewise X 2
[14:07] <Froborr> I haven't even reached that line yet?
[14:07] <Froborr> Okay, just did.
[14:07] <Froborr> It's 4:45 for me.
[14:07] <Froborr> ...which is the length of the OP difference.
[14:07] <Froborr> Okay, all resume from that line?
[14:07] <Arrlaari> On my video the line is at 1:40
[14:07] <Froborr> ....
[14:07] <Arrlaari> Adobe flash crashed
[14:08] <@Sylocat> That's still not... what the heck?
[14:08] <Froborr> Okay.
[14:08] <Froborr> I'm calling this.
[14:08] <Arrlaari> Oh, but that was some other flash thing, the actual video is fine
[14:08] <@Sylocat> Can we just start over from the end of the opening credits?
[14:08] <Froborr> Yeah, okay.
[14:08] <mere_oblivion> fine by me
[14:08] <FoME> Are you sure you have the right episode, Froborr?
[14:08] <Arrlaari> I found that line fine
[14:09] <FoME> Never mind then.
[14:09] <Arrlaari> It's near the beginning, when the people on the Other World are in the wolf people's caravan
[14:09] <@Sylocat> Okay, let me know when you're back at the end of the credits...
[14:09] <Arrlaari> or wagon or whatever
[14:09] <FoME> I'm just after the opening.
[14:09] <Arrlaari> End of the credits is beginning of video for me, I'm there
[14:09] <@Sylocat> Okay?
[14:09] <@Sylocat> Ready?
[14:09] <mere_oblivion> I'm back at 1:34 (end of creds)
[14:09] <Froborr> Yep.
[14:09] <Froborr> Ready.
[14:10] <@Sylocat> 3...2...1...
[14:10] <@Sylocat> Click
[14:10] <@Sylocat> "Was it all just a dream, or a vision?
[14:10] <@Sylocat> (and as Froborr mentioned, she starts out with the boy she has a crush on)
[14:10] <Arrlaari> They're surrounded ... by friends!
[14:10] <@Sylocat> But at least she doesn't spend the entire series moping over it
[14:11] <FoME> Preferable to the alternative.
[14:11] <Arrlaari> Hitomi's mom must have heard some shit from grandma.
[14:11] <Froborr> Sylo: That would be a spoiler, now woudln't it?
[14:11] <@Sylocat> Sorry
[14:11] <Froborr> Damn, that is one huge bison thing.
[14:12] <Arrlaari> Why can't she see anything nice?
[14:12] <@Sylocat> Of course, these days I notice the static crowd and cel
[14:12] <@Sylocat> Aarlaari, what episode does it say you're on?
[14:13] <@Sylocat> Ah, there he is... Balgus
[14:13] <Arrlaari> None of them seem to be entertaining the possibility that he didn't come back because it killed him
[14:13] <@Sylocat> And we meet Merle, this show's interpretation of the obligatory cat-girl
[14:13] <Froborr> How far ahead are you, Sylo?
[14:13] <@Sylocat> I thought we all started from the end of the opening credits
[14:14] <FoME> She's only just getting that he's a prince?
[14:14] <Arrlaari> It says 2
[14:14] <mere_oblivion> That surprised me, too (that she only just got it)
[14:14] <@Sylocat> This is getting weird
[14:14] <Froborr> I did.
[14:14] <Froborr> I think your copy is FASTER than mine.
[14:14] <Arrlaari> Van is showing them the rock
[14:14] <Froborr> Same here.
[14:15] <FoME> Hitomi's having a flashback to class here.
[14:15] <mere_oblivion> I'm there in her flashback too.
[14:15] <Froborr> That hasn't happened yet.
[14:15] <Arrlaari> Yeah you guys are running ahead of us
[14:15] <mere_oblivion> I'll pause again?
[14:15] <FoME> ...How?
[14:15] <@Sylocat> I'm only a little behind mere_oblivion and FoME
[14:15] <Arrlaari> Just seeing the mecha
[14:15] <@Sylocat> *headdesk*
[14:16] <Froborr> Yeah, me and arrlaari are synched, but significantly behidn the rest of you.
[14:16] <Arrlaari> How does she have a change of her normal clothe?
[14:16] <@Sylocat> Let us know when you get to her flashback of class
[14:16] <Froborr> That is a really good question Arrlaari.
[14:16] <Arrlaari> Flashback
[14:16] <Froborr> Yep, Flashback.
[14:16] <@Sylocat> Okay then, re-clicking
[14:17] <mere_oblivion> 'deed
[14:17] <@Sylocat> Ass shot of the guy
[14:17] <@Sylocat> Of course
[14:17] <Froborr> Catgirl in the window!
[14:17] <@Sylocat> Oh, Merle
[14:17] <Froborr> Man, remember when catgirls were EVERYWHERE.
[14:17] <@Sylocat> Yeah, they had one in every show...
[14:17] <@Sylocat> And each one was a different design, it was like the main innovation
[14:18] <@Sylocat> Oh, THAT'S how she has a change of clothes
[14:18] <Froborr> Hmm, her pendant is the same color as the energist.
[14:18] <@Sylocat> Ooh, you do NOT mess with Hitomi's pendant
[14:18] <Arrlaari> Well at least she acts like a cat. I still would prefer if she looked like a Charr
[14:18] <FoME> I do appreciate a catgirl that actually exhibits feline behavior.
[14:19] <Froborr> Hitomi is really turned on by athletic displays, huh.
[14:19] <@Sylocat> Well, she's an athlete, so...
[14:19] <FoME> Yeah, this seems like a real fair match...
[14:19] <@Sylocat> Gee, I wonder if THIS weakness will come up again
[14:20] <@Sylocat> Does Merle know yet where Hitomi is from?
[14:20] <Froborr> Jeez, this samurai guy is GINORMOUS.
[14:20] <@Sylocat> I can't remember
[14:20] <@Sylocat> Eeyup
[14:20] <@Sylocat> With the scars and only one eye
[14:20] <mere_oblivion> She calls her "a foreigner," but nothing more specific.
[14:20] <@Sylocat> AND he's the mentor/trainer figure
[14:20] <Froborr> Ghost mech!
[14:20] <FoME> I doubt she knows the specifics, only that Hitomi's not from here.
[14:20] <Froborr> Or cloaked or whatever.
[14:21] <Froborr> Balgus is the giant samurai, yes?
[14:21] <FoME> Damn Romulans.
[14:21] <@Sylocat> Yep
[14:21] <Froborr> I was thinking Jem'Hadar, but yeah.
[14:22] <@Sylocat> Solid lasers!
[14:22] <Arrlaari> That looks like an unpleasant way to be assasinated
[14:22] <Froborr> "What is it?"
[14:22] <mere_oblivion> "Know any good ones?"
[14:22] <Froborr> "A hunter-destroyer--"
[14:22] <Froborr> "oooh!"
[14:22] <Froborr> "A hunter-"
[14:22] <Arrlaari> Stomping around like that somewhat mitigates the advantages of optical stealth
[14:22] <Froborr> "Ooooh!"
[14:23] <@Sylocat> These guys obviously don't care about covering their tracks
[14:23] <Froborr> So it isn't Romulans or Jem'Hadar, it's Irkens.
[14:23] <@Sylocat> We have our title
[14:23] <FoME> Well, when you're heavy enough that every footprint is a crater...
[14:23] <@Sylocat> (or part of it)
[14:24] <Froborr> Well, this isn't going well for the presumptive good guys.
[14:24] <@Sylocat> This gets dark in a hurry
[14:24] <Arrlaari> Why are they even invisible when their weapon one shots every enemy
[14:24] <FoME> Wait, it looks more like the thing has a plus-sized invisibility cloak.
[14:24] <@Sylocat> These guys really aren't cut out for stealth
[14:25] <Arrlaari> Did I get glitched out?
[14:25] <@Sylocat> Ooh, summoning an eidolon
[14:25] <FoME> I don't know, did you?
[14:25] <Froborr> Anything which requires a blood pact is generally a bad idea.
[14:25] <@Sylocat> Oh, I forgot... Escaflowne hatches from an egg
[14:25] <FoME> Even when it's in the title of the show?
[14:26] <Arrlaari> I think I got the glitch where one is disconnected and it just looks like everyone is quiet
[14:26] <@Sylocat> We did go a while without speaking, IIRC
[14:26] <Froborr> Yeah, this has "there is a dark secret to these mecha" written all over it.
[14:27] <@Sylocat> I love the steampunk piloting system
[14:27] <Froborr> That IS really cool-looking.
[14:27] <FoME> And I'm sure the exposed heart will never be a problem. But it is an awesome design.
[14:27] <Arrlaari> I dunno, it's just powered by a dragon's magic heart rock, that seems like a normal magical artifact kind of thing
[14:27] <@Sylocat> You know, this was my first mecha anime... I had no idea it was mostly the domain of high-tech sci-fi
[14:28] <@Sylocat> Gee, that doesn't look phallic
[14:28] <FoME> I want a theme song that consists of a choir chanting my name.
[14:28] <Froborr> Because he can see it, it doesn't get its accuracy bonuses and Sneak Attack damage.
[14:28] <@Sylocat> Yep, just mechas with stealth capes
[14:29] <mere_oblivion> FoME: Just hire a Carl Orff wannabe and you're covered.
[14:29] <@Sylocat> GO BALGUS
[14:29] <FoME> So badass, he doesn't even need a mecha.
[14:29] <Froborr> That is some serious badass.
[14:29] <@Sylocat> Yeah, Balgus is awesome
[14:30] <Froborr> Dude, he just PARRIED A MECH and then killed it.
[14:30] <@Sylocat> Whoa, Van learned fast how to be delicate with precision movements in that thing
[14:30] <Froborr> That is like Jin Uzuki or Id/Fei/Grahf-level badass.
[14:30] <@Sylocat> Dang
[14:30] <Froborr> Well, yeah, of course Balgus dies.
[14:31] <Froborr> If he lived, this would be a three-episode series.
[14:31] <@Sylocat> He has to, it's the scene where the hero's hometown gets burned
[14:31] <@Sylocat> I suppose he was pretty OP
[14:31] <FoME> It's the Batman Principle. He has to win every time. They only need to win once.
[14:31] <Froborr> "Oh hey, Balgus is dead, we don't need stealth anymore."
[14:31] <Froborr> Clearly, they were just hiding from Balgus.
[14:32] <@Sylocat> Eeyup
[14:32] <Arrlaari> I was saying while I was glitched
[14:32] <@Sylocat> These closing credits, on the other hand, make no sense
[14:32] <Froborr> Yeah, they're terrible.
[14:32] <@Sylocat> But oh well
[14:32] <Arrlaari> It was hard to understand why they even had stealth when they were one-shotting every opponent
[14:32] <Arrlaari> I don't get closing credits
[14:32] <Froborr> Yeah, I saw that Arrlaari.
[14:32] <Froborr> Trust me, you're not missing anything.
[14:33] <Froborr> And yeah, I think their stealth was just for the Sneak Attack bonuses and so they could hide from Balgus.
[14:33] <@Sylocat> The opening is great though
[14:33] <FoME> So they could keep one-shotting them without any effective retaliation, I suppose.
[14:33] <Froborr> Okay, any quick final thoguhts before I copy this up to the blog?
[14:33] <@Sylocat> The stealth cloaks aren't even that great... they have to break cover to make any attack at all
[14:33] <@Sylocat> Aside from me and dad's obligatory "This brings back memories?"
[14:33] <Arrlaari> But "hiding from Balgus" totally explains it
[14:34] <FoME> Balgus clearly had favored enemy (mecha)
[14:34] <mere_oblivion> Er, "This brings back memories"? (Sorry.)

Sailor Moon Crystal

[14:39] <@Sylocat> Dream sequence?
[14:39] <FoME> Wait. If she's on the moon, then what's in front of the Earth?
[14:39] <Arrlaari> An Ominous Black Sphere
[14:39] <@Sylocat> Ooh, maybe she's on Gaea with Hitomi?
[14:39] <@Sylocat> Well, it was a dream sequence
[14:39] <Froborr> Nope, he's dead. That's the end.
[14:39] <@Sylocat> We should be so lucky
[14:40] <@Sylocat> Every episode I keep thinking that it sounds like TENMON did the music
[14:40] <@Sylocat> (well, not the opening, that sounds like whoever did the KLK themes)
[14:40] <Arrlaari> I forget if I've mentioned before, but it's REVO, a group that did the Shingeki OPs and all the music for Bravely Default
[14:41] <@Sylocat> Ah... I haven't seen those
[14:41] <@Sylocat> Are they good?
[14:41] <Arrlaari> Well, I like what I've heard of them
[14:41] <Arrlaari> i.e. this, Shingeki OPs, and Bravely Default music
[14:41] <FoME> Ad after the opening.
[14:42] <@Sylocat> As usual
[14:42] <FoME> I'm back.
[14:43] <@Sylocat> Wait, is it called "Reunion" or "Endymion" (Endouchemion)
[14:43] <@Sylocat> Hahah... I love that they have a command center
[14:43] <FoME> I believe "Endymion" is the subtitle.
[14:44] <@Sylocat> Ah, and here he's in his brainwashed mode
[14:44] <@Sylocat> Whoa... it's not even subtext anymore, it's just text
[14:44] <Froborr> BrainwasheD or brainwasheR?
[14:44] <@Sylocat> Both
[14:44] <FoME> Yes.
[14:45] <@Sylocat> "You have red irises! You must be from Ishval!"
[14:45] <FoME> Oh, hey, it's Motoki's fiancee. At least, she was in the original anime.
[14:45] <Arrlaari> The book just happens to have the rocks they are named after on the cover
[14:46] <@Sylocat> I thought talking loud was SOP in anime
[14:46] <@Sylocat> Ahahah... suspicious, carrying a giant broadsword around
[14:46] <FoME> Maybe just a little.
[14:46] <Arrlaari> That's not how diamond hardness works
[14:46] <@Sylocat> Just say you're cosplaying, you look exactly like a gazillion other anime characters
[14:47] <Arrlaari> If it's poisonous why are they handling it with their bare hands
[14:47] <@Sylocat> "Poisonous?" Diamonds can be poisoned?
[14:47] <FoME> "What, doesn't everyone have spare diamond rings on hand?"
[14:47] <Arrlaari> It's the sword and the rock from the palace that are poisoned
[14:47] <@Sylocat> It must be some different kind of poison
[14:47] <Froborr> Usagi should've had drawings all over her face when she woke up.
[14:48] <Arrlaari> I guess it's poison if ingested? That's what happened to Cave Johnson
[14:48] <Froborr> IIRC it was because he breathed it, not ingested it.
[14:48] <FoME> Usagi's red string of fate seems to be a bungee cord.
[14:48] <Froborr> Whcih IIIRC is actually the danger with moondust.
[14:48] <FoME> Ad.
[14:49] <@Sylocat> Hey, Crunchyroll put the ads in the right place
[14:49] <FoME> Shocking, isn't it?
[14:49] <@Sylocat> I think moondust is dangerous because it's got sharp edges, like crushed glass
[14:49] <@Sylocat> I think I read that on Cracked
[14:49] <FoME> I'm back
[14:50] <FoME> And I wouldn't want to breathe in crushed glass.
[14:50] <Froborr> Makes sense, given lack of erosive forces on the Moon.
[14:50] <@Sylocat> So he IS in university
[14:50] <Arrlaari> Yeah, they're also magnetic so any kind of electronics will get covered with them
[14:50] <@Sylocat> Ooh, Luna has a cell phone
[14:51] <@Sylocat> Well duh
[14:51] <@Sylocat> They should tell her to get away from him even when he's "normal"
[14:51] <Froborr> Oh yes, tell the adolescent girl to stay away from the dangerous older boy, that always works.
[14:51] <@Sylocat> Worse, now he's a "Bad Boy."
[14:51] <@Sylocat> A Bad Boy who needs rescuing from his own dark demons
[14:52] <@Sylocat> Yep, he hasn't changed all that much
[14:52] <FoME> I'd say he's even more of a creep.
[14:52] <@Sylocat> "Usako?"
[14:53] <Froborr> Hard to believe it's possible, but yes, I'd say he's more of a creep.
[14:53] <@Sylocat> These subtitles are very... literal
[14:53] <Froborr> IIRC "Usako" is the false name she gave him that one time.
[14:53] <Arrlaari> It's the pet name he started using shortly before being captured
[14:53] <FoME> His pet name for her.
[14:53] <@Sylocat> Ooh, smouldering gazes into each other's eyes
[14:54] <FoME> Wow. And Mamoru didn't bother to hypnotize more than two people for his cover story.
[14:54] <Froborr> Well, they're translating EXTREMELY rapidly, being ultra-literal makes snese.
[14:54] <@Sylocat> True...
[14:55] <@Sylocat> "Stay away from Mamoru Chiba." Good advice in pretty much all situations, but of course she's not going to listen
[14:55] <FoME> Darn it, why did they send the brawler to confront him? They always have crap Will saves.
[14:55] <@Sylocat> What, he's there already?
[14:55] <Froborr> Wait, seriously?
[14:55] <Froborr> Arcade dude is going to be a minion now?
[14:55] <Arrlaari> Is this the first time Venus has done a fully transform animation?
[14:55] <@Sylocat> A Sailor Scout fell for a Suggestion Spell?
[14:55] <FoME> I believe so.
[14:55] <@Sylocat> Ooh, nice ribbon effect
[14:55] <Arrlaari> Different pen styles
[14:56] <@Sylocat> (shades of Mami, which is probably intentional)
[14:56] <FoME> The funny thing is that those two already were friends in the originial anime.
[14:56] <FoME> Also, it seems this episode needs to fill a lot of time.
[14:57] <@Sylocat> Yes... I love the transformation sequences, but can't they do a joint one?
[14:57] <Froborr> Yeah, this is draaaaaagging.
[14:57] <@Sylocat> Don't tell me the entire rest of the episode is going to be their transformation and catchphrases leading up to the battle... that'd be worse than Dragon Ball Z
[14:57] <FoME> Wow. And pre-battle taunts. Sheesh.
[14:57] <Arrlaari> Given the overall pacing of the show it feels like they finally found space to show off all the work they put into the transforms
[14:57] <Froborr> Magica Quintent this ain't.
[14:58] <@Sylocat> Oh for goodness's sake
[14:58] <@Sylocat> Usagi, DO SOMETHING
[14:58] <FoME> Oh, now he has magic.
[14:58] <Froborr> But I bet he's still a non-teleporting loser.
[14:58] <FoME> Well, I suppose the mind control indicated that.
[14:59] <@Sylocat> Please tell me Usagi's finally going to work up the nerve to slap him out of it
[14:59] <Froborr> BECAUSE HE'S EVIL, USAGI.
[14:59] <@Sylocat> (this is one of the VERY few occasions in which I would actually recommend "Knocking some sense into" someone)
[14:59] <Froborr> Oh ffs just murder him already.
[15:00] <@Sylocat> Oh, he did NOT just hurt the kitty
[15:00] <@Sylocat> Well, FINALLY
[15:00] <Froborr> Okay, I like that him hurting Luna was the last straw.
[15:00] <FoME> You can kick her friends' asses as much as you want, but hurt her cat and you will pay.
[15:00] <Froborr> Of course, now there's just enough time for her trasnformation sequence and then the cliffhanger.
[15:00] <@Sylocat> It's a kids' show... of course the cat is sacred
[15:00] <Arrlaari> It does play into a trope I see, where women refuse to fight until someone they care about is hurt right in front of her
[15:01] <FoME> Of course, that implies she doesn't care about any of the other Senshi.
[15:01] <@Sylocat> Hey, Usagi? While you're at it, get Jupiter to snap out of it too
[15:01] <@Sylocat> Oh... she's actually doing that?
[15:01] <Froborr> Once again, Mercury is the smart one.
[15:01] <@Sylocat> That's...nice
[15:01] <@Sylocat> She's actually doing something sensible
[15:01] <FoME> Hell of an entrance.
[15:01] <@Sylocat> Oh crud
[15:01] <Froborr> no sell
[15:02] <@Sylocat> I didn't see that one coming
[15:02] <@Sylocat> WHAT?
[15:03] <@Sylocat> "Are you Mamo-chan?"
[15:03] <@Sylocat> Are you kidding me?
[15:03] <Froborr> *facepalm*
[15:03] <FoME> Sadly, no.
[15:03] <Arrlaari> They just got done convincing her that he's a constructed impostor
[15:03] <@Sylocat> For the love of...
[15:03] <Froborr> Okay, quick final thoughts before I copy this up and head out?
[15:03] <@Sylocat> This is worse than the four Rock Knights being the Sailor Scouts' boyfriends
[15:04] <@Sylocat> This is turning into Twilight
[15:04] <Froborr> Yeah.
[15:04] <Froborr> "Boys are all evil, but with your love you can change them!" That's... healthy.
[15:05] <@Sylocat> Okay, deep breath, the preview almost looks decent
[15:05] <Froborr> I skipped it.
[15:05] <FoME> I swear the earlier anime isn't this bad.
[15:05] <@Sylocat> I was actually preferring this one for a while, since Tuxedo Fedora doesn't have to swoop in every episode to save her
[15:06] <Froborr> I still find it difficult to believe anything can run that many episodes and be any good.
[15:06] <FoME> Eh, she saves herself. His greatest power is inspirational speeches.
[15:06] <Arrlaari> More like his only power
[15:06] <FoME> I won't deny there are pacing problems, but it at least gives the story room to breathe.
[15:07] <Froborr> Anyway, sorry to cut this short, but I've gotta run.
[15:07] <@Sylocat> I should watch the original anime with subtitles instead of dubbed... maybe it'll be better?
[15:07] <Arrlaari> The older Sailor Moon Anime actually got better in the later seasons

    1. Well, I mean, I think it's fair to read a predatory sexuality into even-more-evil Tuxedo Mask. It's the failure to recognize the predatory aspect to normal Mask that's more of a problem.
